Thai Ambassador and Deputy Secretary-General of OAP Participate in High-Level Discussions at CTBTO Science and Technology Conference

H.E. Ms Pattarat Hongtong, Ambassador of Thailand, attended the Science and Technology Conference (SnT) organized by the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) from 8–12 September 2025 in Vienna, Austria.

This conference received wide attention at a high level, with over 1,000 participants from around the world, reflecting continued support for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Dr. Robert Floyr, Executive Secretary of CTBTO, delivered the opening remarks, while H.E. Ms Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria, delivered welcoming remarks reaffirming Austria’s commitment to nuclear disarmament, as well as Vienna’s role as a hub of multilateral diplomacy.

On this occasion, Ms. Pennapa Kanchana, Deputy Secretary-General of Thailand’s Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP), was invited to deliver a special address during the High-Level Day. She emphasized the importance of international cooperation, particularly between Thailand and the CTBTO, including the use of the International Monitoring System (IMS), the International Data Center (IDC), tsunami monitoring and other forms of surveillance, as well as scientific innovation and capacity building to further enhance the effectiveness of the CTBT verification system.

The CTBTO works to ensure that no nuclear explosion goes undetected through a verification system with a global network of stations. It also obtains high technology for various civilian purposes, including disaster prevention and mitigation. Thailand is a site for two stations under the IMS, one in Chiang Mai and one in Nakon Pathom.

The Science and Technology Conference series is a flagship CTBTO initiative, providing a platform for scientists, policymakers, and diplomats worldwide to exchange knowledge and showcase innovations that enhance verification regime and advance the universalization of the Treaty and its entry into force. By fostering collaboration across disciplines and regions, the conference advances the shared goal of a world free from nuclear testing.
