Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna Meets with UNODC Regional Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific

On 16 October 2025, Ms. Delphine Schantz, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP), based in Bangkok, met with Ms. Pattarat Hongtong, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna, to discuss ways to further strengthen regional cooperation between Thailand and UNODC. Both sides exchanged views on a wide range of issues including triangular cooperation against regional transnational crimes.

Ambassador Pattarat reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to working closely with UNODC to enhance security in the region, through cooperation in various areas. She underscored Thailand’s continued efforts to address drug-related challenges through Alternative Development (AD), a sustainable approach aimed at improving livelihoods and reducing dependence on illicit crops cultivation. The Ambassador also proposed triangular cooperation among Thailand, UNODC, and partner countries to share Thailand’s successful AD experiences with other countries in the region. In addition, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of addressing online scams, which have affected Thailand, the region and beyond, and exchanged information on key upcoming forums in which Thailand will play an active role, including the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (15th UN Crime Congress) to be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.  

Ms. Schantz emphasized the crucial role of effective border management and commended Thailand’s leadership within the ASEAN framework. She reiterated UNODC’s readiness to continue working closely with Thailand to advance joint efforts on drug control, combatting online scams and fostering triangular cooperation, with a view to strengthening regional cooperation and addressing common challenges in the region.
