Thai visas and the e-Visa application process
All visa applications must be submitted online through the e-Visa system at thaievisa.go.th. In-person applications are not possible and the Embassy does not accept visa applications by post.
Information regarding visa status will not be provided by e-mail or telephone. Do not come to the Royal Thai Embassy unless you are called for an interview.
Do you need a visa?
Foreign travellers entering Thailand fall into three categories, depending on nationality, the purpose of entry and the intended duration of stay:
- Travellers who do not need a visa to enter Thailand (Visa Exemption)
- Travellers who can apply for a visa upon arrival in Thailand (Visa on Arrival)
Travellers who need a visa to enter Thailand — see the visa types below
- Tourist Visa (TR) — tourism, leisure, visiting family, short medical treatment
- Transit Visa (TS) — transit, crew members, athletes
- Non-Immigrant Visa “O”
- Non-Immigrant Visa “O” (Family) — staying with family
- Non-Immigrant Visa “O” (Retirement) — retirement
- Non-Immigrant Visa “O” (Other purposes) — medical treatment, volunteering
- Non-Immigrant Visa “O-A” (Long Stay) — one-year stay for applicants aged 50 and over
- Non-Immigrant Visa “ED” — education, training, internships, Dharma study
- Non-Immigrant Visa “B” and “IB” — employment, business visits, teaching
- Diplomatic Visa “D” — holders of diplomatic passports or red UNLP
- Official Visa “F” — holders of official or service passports or blue UNLP
- Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) — digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, soft power activities
Important information before you apply
- When applying, exercise extra caution in choosing the right TYPE OF PASSPORT. If you are not a government officer, do NOT choose “Official/Service Passport”; choose “Ordinary Passport/Travel document” instead.
- If you hold a non-ordinary passport, pay attention to the nationality stated on your passport.
- Once the application is made, visa fees shall not be returned under any circumstances.
- If there are mistakes in the application — wrong spelling of names, wrong passport number, wrong date of issue or wrong date of expiry — the application will be rejected. Applicants will be required to apply and pay again. No refund is possible.
- Applicants must ensure that all their details are correct before submitting and paying for their applications.
- Additional service fees for online payment may be charged by your debit or credit card provider. Please contact your card provider for more information. The Royal Thai Embassy assumes no liability for additional fees incurred by applicants for their online payment.
Attention
- Do NOT come to the Royal Thai Embassy unless invited for an interview.
- ALL visa applications must be submitted through https://thaievisa.go.th/ (e-Visa website) ONLY.
- The e-Visa applicants may submit the application as early as 90 days before the date of arrival in Thailand. Once the application is made, visa fees shall not be returned under any circumstances.
- Consular officers reserve the right to request additional documents.
- When applying for a Non-Immigrant O (multiple-entry) and DTV visa, documents in foreign languages must be translated into Thai by a court-sworn translator in Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia. If translated into English, it should be notarized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia.
- In the absence of a required document, a letter explaining the unavailability of that document must be provided.
- The visa processing fee is subject to change without prior notice.
- Nationals of certain countries are required to apply for a visa only at the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in their home or residence country, or at the designated Thai Embassy.
- Applicants must provide genuine documents and information. If applicants provide fraudulent documents or false information, their applications will be rejected and they may be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.
- The e-Visa applicants are advised to use an email account that does not contain “-“ (the hyphen) in creating an e-Visa application account on the e-Visa website such as @gmail.com, @outlook.com, and @hotmail.com. “Mann-Frau@t-online.de” is an example of an email account that contains “-“, and thus should not be used in the online e-Visa application.
- In the e-Visa website, please fill in all information in the English language. The automatic translation function in the web browser should not be used.
- The e-Visa applicants must color scan the bio-data page of their passports, national ID card, and proof of legal residence in Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia, and upload all the said documents into the e-Visa account. Applicants of non-EU citizenship must upload both sides of the color scanned valid residence card, issued by the relevant Austrian, Slovak or Slovenian authorities
- In the case that first name, and/or middle name, and/or last name contain “-” (the hyphen), the “-“ must also be filled in. For example, for the full name “Anna-Lena Meier-Lehmann“, “Anna-Lena“ must appear on first name space; and “Meier-Lehmann” must be filled in last name space.
- Please carefully upload all documents into the e-Visa account as the documents must show required information, especially full names, dates, etc. The information presented must be clearly visible. For example, the e-Visa system do not accept flight bookings and financial proof that do not show the applicants‘ names, and the screenshots or Print Screen formats of financial statements, flight bookings, and hotel bookings are NOT accepted.
- For applicants under 18 years old, a color scanned birth certificate of the applicant must also be submitted. If the applicant’s parents do not apply for the e-visa at the same time as the applicant, a consent form, signed by both parents, along with bio-data pages of parents‘ passports must also be uploaded. In the case that one of the parents applies for the e-Visa with the applicant, a consent form signed by the other parent along with his/her bio-data page of passport must be submitted.
- After the successful payment of the e-Visa fee, all information filled in the application form cannot be changed or edited. Should the applicant find any misinformation or misspelling, the applicant must proceed with a complete new e-Visa application together with a new e-Visa fee payment.
- It is necessary for the visa applicants to be present in Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia for the submission of e-Visa application and its fee payment. In some cases, the Embassy may invite the applicant to the Embassy for an in-person interview; therefore, the applicant is strongly advised to remain in Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia until the decision is made. In addition, a valid e-Visa that suits the purpose of the intended visit must be obtained BEFORE entering Thailand. Please also note that the applicant who is resident in another country/territory other than Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia must submit a visa application to the Royal Thai Embassy or the Royal Thai Consulate-General that has jurisdiction over the area in which the applicant is physically present.
- After the successful submission of e-Visa application, the applicant may inquire about the status of the application via the e-Visa portal. Should other questions that are not listed on the website occur, applicants may send the question to visa@thaiembassy.at.

How to apply — the e-Visa process
The steps below are the same for every visa type. Only the supporting documents and the fee differ, and those are listed on each visa page.

Applications can be submitted no earlier than 90 days before the intended date of arrival in Thailand. The Embassy recommends applying at least 30 days before the intended date of arrival.

Create an account
- A verification link will be sent to you by email.
- Your account can be used to apply for an e-Visa for yourself and other people in your family (up to 10 applications at a time).
- Your account can also be used for future visa applications.

Apply for a new visa
- Check your eligibility and choose the visa category.
- Upload the biodata page of your passport and a photo taken within the last 6 months (JPG or JPEG format, size not exceeding 3 MB).
- With regard to the photograph requirements, the e-Visa website accepts only facial biometric color photograph which must NOT be older than 6 months from the date of submission of the application. In the biometric photograph, the hair must not block the face area; and sunglasses or eyeglasses with optical frames are NOT permitted. The photograph must be properly cropped with no photo edges displayed, and uploaded with adequate resolution into the e-Visa account. - Enter personal information.
- When filling in information such as first name, middle name, last name, date of birth, passport number, and other passport details, the said information must match the data on the passport.

See the page for your visa type. Two documents are required for every application:
- Document indicating current location. For Austria, upload an official Austrian Meldebestätigung issued and stamped by the authority, issued no longer than 30 days. For Slovakia and Slovenia, upload a copy of the Slovak or Slovenian ID card or residence permit on both sides (front and back).
- For Non-Immigrant O (multiple-entry) AND DTV visa who has a main residency in Austria, upload an official Austrian Meldebestätigung issued and stamped by the authority, issued no longer than 30 days. Those who have a main residency in Slovakia and Slovenia, upload a copy of Permanent Residence Certificate issued no longer than 30 days.
- Applicants must apply for an e-Visa via the Embassy or Consulate corresponding to their consular jurisdiction and residency, and must upload a document that verifies their current residency.
Remark: A submitted document MUST be issued in English. Documents in foreign languages must be translated into English, and the translation should be notarized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia.

Check status
- You can monitor the status of your application by logging into your account.
- You may also withdraw your application.
- Once approved, the e-Visa will be sent to you by email. You may also download your e-Visa through your online account.
- The Embassy may request additional documents to be uploaded on the e-Visa platform ONLY. Submission by email is not possible. Download the e-Visa user manual.
Processing time
- After submission of the e-Visa application, applications are processed in chronological order determined by the time of visa fee payment, on a first come, first served basis. The decision will be made within 30 working days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and the Embassy's official holidays). If the Embassy requests additional documents through the e-Visa system, the processing time will be extended by another 15 working days from the date the Embassy receives ALL requested additional documents, which must also match the Embassy's requirements.
- Please apply for an e-Visa at least 1 month (but no longer than 3 months) before travelling.
- Applications by certain nationals can take up to 3 months for approval.
- The Royal Thai Embassy cannot accommodate urgent requests. Applicants must ensure that they leave sufficient time for the visa application process before their planned departure.

Thailändische Visa und das e-Visa-Antragsverfahren
Alle Visumanträge müssen online über das e-Visa-System unter thaievisa.go.th eingereicht werden. Eine persönliche Antragstellung ist nicht möglich, und die Botschaft nimmt keine Visumanträge per Post an.
Auskünfte zum Stand des Visumantrags werden weder per E-Mail noch telefonisch erteilt. Bitte kommen Sie nur dann in die Königlich Thailändische Botschaft, wenn Sie zu einem Interview eingeladen wurden.
Benötigen Sie ein Visum?
Ausländische Reisende, die nach Thailand einreisen, lassen sich je nach Staatsangehörigkeit, Einreisezweck und geplanter Aufenthaltsdauer in drei Gruppen einteilen:
- Reisende, die für die Einreise nach Thailand kein Visum benötigen (Visumbefreiung)
- Reisende, die bei der Ankunft in Thailand ein Visum beantragen können (Visum bei Ankunft)
Reisende, die für die Einreise nach Thailand ein Visum benötigen: siehe die folgenden Visumarten
- Touristenvisum (TR): Tourismus, Freizeit, Familienbesuche, kurze medizinische Behandlung
- Transitvisum (TS): Transit, Besatzungsmitglieder, Sportler
- Non-Immigrant-Visum „O“
- Non-Immigrant-Visum „O“ (Familie): Aufenthalt bei Familienangehörigen
- Non-Immigrant-Visum „O“ (Ruhestand): Ruhestand
- Non-Immigrant-Visum „O“ (sonstige Zwecke): medizinische Behandlung, Freiwilligenarbeit

Wichtige Hinweise vor der Antragstellung
- Achten Sie bei der Antragstellung besonders auf die richtige PASSART. Wenn Sie nicht im Staatsdienst tätig sind, wählen Sie NICHT „Official/Service Passport“, sondern „Ordinary Passport/Travel document“.
- Wenn Sie keinen gewöhnlichen Reisepass besitzen, achten Sie auf die in Ihrem Pass angegebene Staatsangehörigkeit.
- Nach der Antragstellung werden Visumgebühren unter keinen Umständen erstattet.
- Enthält der Antrag Fehler, etwa eine falsche Schreibweise des Namens, eine falsche Passnummer oder ein falsches Ausstellungs- oder Ablaufdatum, wird der Antrag abgelehnt. Antragsteller müssen dann einen neuen Antrag stellen und erneut bezahlen. Eine Erstattung ist nicht möglich.
- Antragsteller müssen sicherstellen, dass alle Angaben korrekt sind, bevor sie den Antrag absenden und bezahlen.
- Für die Online-Zahlung kann Ihr Debit- oder Kreditkartenanbieter zusätzliche Gebühren verlangen. Nähere Informationen erhalten Sie bei Ihrem Kartenanbieter. Die Königlich Thailändische Botschaft haftet nicht für zusätzliche Gebühren, die bei der Online-Zahlung entstehen.
Achtung
- Kommen Sie NICHT in die Königlich Thailändische Botschaft, es sei denn, Sie wurden zu einem Interview eingeladen.
- ALLE Visumanträge sind AUSSCHLIESSLICH über https://thaievisa.go.th/ (e-Visa-Website) einzureichen.
- e-Visa-Anträge können frühestens 90 Tage vor der Einreise nach Thailand gestellt werden. Nach der Antragstellung werden Visumgebühren unter keinen Umständen erstattet.
- Die Konsularbeamten behalten sich vor, zusätzliche Unterlagen anzufordern.
- Bei Anträgen auf ein Non-Immigrant-Visum „O“ (mehrfache Einreise) und ein DTV müssen fremdsprachige Dokumente von einem gerichtlich beeideten Übersetzer in Österreich, der Slowakei oder Slowenien ins Thailändische übersetzt werden. Bei einer Übersetzung ins Englische muss diese vom Außenministerium in Österreich, der Slowakei oder Slowenien beglaubigt sein.
- Fehlt ein erforderliches Dokument, ist ein Schreiben beizulegen, das erklärt, warum es nicht vorgelegt werden kann.
- Die Visumgebühr kann ohne vorherige Ankündigung geändert werden.
- Staatsangehörige bestimmter Länder können ein Visum nur bei der thailändischen Botschaft oder dem Generalkonsulat in ihrem Heimat- oder Wohnsitzland oder bei der dafür bestimmten thailändischen Botschaft beantragen.
- Antragsteller müssen echte Dokumente und wahrheitsgemäße Angaben vorlegen. Bei gefälschten Dokumenten oder falschen Angaben wird der Antrag abgelehnt, und die Einreise nach Thailand kann künftig verweigert werden.
- Für das Konto auf der e-Visa-Website wird eine E-Mail-Adresse ohne „-“ (Bindestrich) empfohlen, zum Beispiel @gmail.com, @outlook.com oder @hotmail.com. „Mann-Frau@t-online.de“ ist ein Beispiel für eine E-Mail-Adresse mit „-“, die für den Online-Antrag nicht verwendet werden sollte.
- Bitte füllen Sie auf der e-Visa-Website alle Angaben auf Englisch aus. Die automatische Übersetzungsfunktion des Browsers sollte nicht verwendet werden.
- Antragsteller müssen die Datenseite ihres Reisepasses, ihren Personalausweis und den Nachweis des rechtmäßigen Aufenthalts in Österreich, der Slowakei oder Slowenien farbig scannen und in das e-Visa-Konto hochladen. Antragsteller ohne EU-Staatsbürgerschaft müssen beide Seiten ihres gültigen Aufenthaltstitels, ausgestellt von den zuständigen österreichischen, slowakischen oder slowenischen Behörden, farbig gescannt hochladen.
- Enthalten Vorname, zweiter Vorname oder Nachname einen „-“ (Bindestrich), muss dieser mit eingegeben werden. Beispiel: Beim Namen „Anna-Lena Meier-Lehmann“ gehört „Anna-Lena“ in das Feld für den Vornamen und „Meier-Lehmann“ in das Feld für den Nachnamen.
- Bitte laden Sie alle Dokumente sorgfältig hoch. Die erforderlichen Angaben, insbesondere vollständige Namen und Daten, müssen gut lesbar sein. Das e-Visa-System akzeptiert zum Beispiel keine Flugbuchungen und Finanznachweise, auf denen der Name des Antragstellers fehlt. Screenshots von Kontoauszügen, Flug- und Hotelbuchungen werden NICHT akzeptiert.
- Für Antragsteller unter 18 Jahren ist zusätzlich eine farbig gescannte Geburtsurkunde einzureichen. Beantragen die Eltern das e-Visa nicht gleichzeitig mit dem Kind, sind eine von beiden Elternteilen unterschriebene Einverständniserklärung und die Datenseiten der Reisepässe beider Elternteile hochzuladen. Beantragt ein Elternteil das e-Visa gemeinsam mit dem Kind, ist eine Einverständniserklärung des anderen Elternteils mit der Datenseite seines Reisepasses einzureichen.
- Nach erfolgreicher Zahlung der e-Visa-Gebühr können die Angaben im Antragsformular nicht mehr geändert werden. Werden falsche Angaben oder Schreibfehler festgestellt, muss ein vollständig neuer e-Visa-Antrag mit erneuter Gebührenzahlung gestellt werden.
- Antragsteller müssen sich bei der Einreichung des e-Visa-Antrags und bei der Zahlung der Gebühr in Österreich, der Slowakei oder Slowenien aufhalten. In manchen Fällen lädt die Botschaft zu einem persönlichen Interview ein. Es wird daher dringend empfohlen, bis zur Entscheidung in Österreich, der Slowakei oder Slowenien zu bleiben. Ein gültiges e-Visa, das dem Reisezweck entspricht, muss VOR der Einreise nach Thailand vorliegen. Antragsteller mit Wohnsitz außerhalb von Österreich, der Slowakei oder Slowenien müssen den Visumantrag bei der Königlich Thailändischen Botschaft oder dem Königlich Thailändischen Generalkonsulat stellen, das für ihren tatsächlichen Aufenthaltsort zuständig ist.
- Nach erfolgreicher Einreichung des e-Visa-Antrags können Antragsteller den Bearbeitungsstand über das e-Visa-Portal abfragen. Bei weiteren Fragen, die auf der Website nicht beantwortet werden, können sich Antragsteller an visa@thaiembassy.at wenden.
- Informationen zur Verlängerung thailändischer Visa finden Sie auf der Website des thailändischen Immigration Bureau unter https://www.immigration.go.th/?p=14714. Die Informationen sind dort auch auf Deutsch, Englisch und Thailändisch verfügbar.
So beantragen Sie ein Visum: das e-Visa-Verfahren
Die folgenden Schritte gelten für alle Visumarten. Unterschiedlich sind nur die erforderlichen Unterlagen und die Gebühr. Diese finden Sie auf der Seite der jeweiligen Visumart.

Anträge können frühestens 90 Tage vor dem geplanten Einreisedatum in Thailand gestellt werden. Die Botschaft empfiehlt, den Antrag mindestens 30 Tage vor dem geplanten Einreisedatum zu stellen.

Konto erstellen
- Sie erhalten per E-Mail einen Bestätigungslink.
- Mit Ihrem Konto können Sie ein e-Visa für sich selbst und für Familienmitglieder beantragen (bis zu 10 Anträge gleichzeitig).
- Das Konto kann auch für spätere Visumanträge verwendet werden.

Neues Visum beantragen
- Prüfen Sie Ihre Berechtigung und wählen Sie die Visumkategorie.
- Laden Sie die Datenseite Ihres Reisepasses und ein Foto hoch, das nicht älter als 6 Monate ist (Format JPG oder JPEG, höchstens 3 MB).
- Zu den Fotoanforderungen: Die e-Visa-Website akzeptiert nur biometrische Farbfotos, die bei der Antragstellung NICHT älter als 6 Monate sind. Die Haare dürfen das Gesicht nicht verdecken. Sonnenbrillen und Brillen mit optischer Fassung sind NICHT erlaubt. Das Foto muss richtig zugeschnitten sein, ohne sichtbare Ränder, und in ausreichender Auflösung in das e-Visa-Konto hochgeladen werden. - Geben Sie Ihre persönlichen Daten ein.
- Angaben wie Vorname, zweiter Vorname, Nachname, Geburtsdatum, Passnummer und weitere Passdaten müssen mit den Daten im Reisepass übereinstimmen.

Unterlagen hochladen
Siehe die Seite Ihrer Visumart. Für jeden Antrag sind zwei Dokumente erforderlich:
- Nachweis des aktuellen Aufenthaltsorts. Für Österreich: eine amtliche österreichische Meldebestätigung, von der Behörde ausgestellt und abgestempelt, nicht älter als 30 Tage. Für die Slowakei und Slowenien: eine Kopie des slowakischen oder slowenischen Personalausweises oder Aufenthaltstitels (Vorder- und Rückseite).
- Für das Non-Immigrant-Visum „O“ (mehrfache Einreise) und das DTV: Antragsteller mit Hauptwohnsitz in Österreich laden eine amtliche österreichische Meldebestätigung hoch, von der Behörde ausgestellt und abgestempelt, nicht älter als 30 Tage. Antragsteller mit Hauptwohnsitz in der Slowakei oder Slowenien laden eine Kopie der Bescheinigung über den Daueraufenthalt hoch, nicht älter als 30 Tage.
- Das e-Visa ist über die Botschaft oder das Konsulat zu beantragen, das für den Konsularbezirk und Wohnsitz des Antragstellers zuständig ist. Dabei ist ein Dokument hochzuladen, das den aktuellen Wohnsitz belegt.
Hinweis: Eingereichte Dokumente MÜSSEN in englischer Sprache ausgestellt sein. Fremdsprachige Dokumente sind ins Englische zu übersetzen, und die Übersetzung ist vom Außenministerium in Österreich, der Slowakei oder Slowenien zu beglaubigen.

Status prüfen
- Den Stand Ihres Antrags sehen Sie, wenn Sie sich in Ihr Konto einloggen.
- Sie können Ihren Antrag auch zurückziehen.
- Nach der Genehmigung wird Ihnen das e-Visa per E-Mail zugesandt. Sie können es auch über Ihr Online-Konto herunterladen.
- Die Botschaft kann zusätzliche Unterlagen anfordern. Diese sind AUSSCHLIESSLICH über die e-Visa-Plattform hochzuladen. Eine Übermittlung per E-Mail ist nicht möglich. e-Visa-Benutzerhandbuch herunterladen (Englisch).
Bearbeitungszeit
- e-Visa-Anträge werden in der Reihenfolge der Gebührenzahlung bearbeitet. Die Entscheidung erfolgt innerhalb von 30 Arbeitstagen (ohne Samstage, Sonntage und Feiertage der Botschaft). Fordert die Botschaft über das e-Visa-System zusätzliche Unterlagen an, verlängert sich die Bearbeitungszeit um weitere 15 Arbeitstage ab dem Eingang ALLER angeforderten Unterlagen, die ebenfalls den Anforderungen der Botschaft entsprechen müssen.
- Bitte beantragen Sie das e-Visa mindestens 1 Monat (aber höchstens 3 Monate) vor der Reise.
