Celebrating Songkran: A Heritage of Humanity in the Heart of Vienna
On 20 April 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna in collaboration with the Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel and Cercle Diplomatique Magazine hosted a Luncheon Reception to celebrate the Songkran Festival at Hotel Anantara.
The event was attended by a distinguished gathering of the diplomatic corps, diplomats, business leaders, and prominent members of society. H.E. Mr. Maximilian Hennig, Chief of Protocol of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, attended as the Guest of Honor. In his remarks, he expressed admiration for Thailand’s beautiful traditions and the excellence of Thai cuisine, which remains a favorite in Austria.
H.E. Ms. Pattarat Hongtong, Ambassador of Thailand to Austria, highlighted the profound significance of Songkran as the traditional Thai New Year and a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage. She shared that Songkran is a time of renewal, gratitude, and family togetherness, where people return to their hometowns to reunite with loved ones. She also emphasized the importance of the water-pouring ceremony as a gesture of paying respect to elders and receiving their blessings for a prosperous year ahead.
The event offered guests a glimpse into Thai traditions, including the symbolic "Song Nam Phra" (pouring water over a Buddha statue) to wash away misfortune and welcome prosperity. The afternoon was further enriched by a graceful Thai dance performance and a specially curated "flying buffet" featuring traditional Thai summer cuisine designed to refresh the senses. The Thai menu presented at the event was a collaboration between the Embassy and the Anantara Hotel, in which a Thai Cooking Master Class was held earlier at the Ambassador’s residence to share the special recipes and preparation methods created specifically for this festival.
