The Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak 2025
On 12 May 2025, the Permanent Mission of Thailand together with the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka and the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) jointly commemorated International Day of Vesak 2025. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and officials from UNOV.
Ambassador Pattarat Hongtong delivered a remarks, emphasizing the significance of Vesak Day and citing one of the Buddha's teachings on “Appamāda” - Heedfulness, the Lord Buddha's last teaching. She highlighted the importance of heedfulness as a guidance for daily life and for navigating the complexities of the modern world with mindfulness and wisdom. This principle of heedfulness also leads to the "Middle Path" (Majjhimāpaṭipadā), which resonates with the core values of the United Nations which advocates multilateralism, dialogues, and finding common ground. Furthermore, heedfulness connects with Thailand's Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP), which underscores moderation, reasonableness, and resilience for sustainable development, leaving no one behind, and consistent with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
